Getting rid of unwanted hair can be a source of annoyance and frustration. Many women spend significant time and energy to shave or wax their legs, bikini areas, armpits and even faces. Men often are bothered by excessive back, neck, or chest hair. Laser hair removal is a solution to the problem that is safe, effective, and comfortable.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Wake Plastic Surgery has the Apogee Elite Laser Hair Removal System that uses laser energy at wavelengths of 755 nm and 1064 nm. The 755 nm energy is efficacious for lighter skin types and the 1064 nm allows for effective treatment of patients with darker skin tones.

What Should I Expect During The Procedure?

The laser energy will be delivered through a precise handpiece that has a large spot size which allows for a quicker treatment. There is some discomfort that is minimized by the cooling chiller unit that eliminates the need for messy gel products. The hair follicles absorb the laser energy and are vaporized. This causes a small amount of smoke and a bit of a burning smell. The result is a semi permanent destruction of the hair follicles that are in the anagen phase of growth. The number of hair follicles in the anagen phase is determined by location on the body, hair color, and type of hair. The hair follicles that are dormant will need to be treated at subsequent sessions when they enter the anagen phase. For optimal results, patients should expect to require between 4-6 treatments to effectively treat an area. Most treatments are scheduled 4-6 weeks apart. After the treatments there may be some minor redness and swelling of the skin that fades away hours after the procedure. Some patients report a sensation of a mild sunburn after a treatment, but most patients are have no post procedure discomfort or symptoms.
